Our Itinerary for Kyoto, Japan

One of the many guidebooks we used.

Sunday, November 9th,

Hello friends! For the few of you interested in our trip to Japan, here is our itinerary of what we plan to do. As to whether we will be able to fly out come Tuesday morning (due to the government-budget shut down) so far, our flights are still scheduled.

November 11th/12th: We fly from Spokane about 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday the 11th, to Seattle, Seattle to Tokyo, Tokyo to Osaka, and arrive about 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday the 12th. We then head by bus from Osaka to the Marriot Moxy Hotel in Kyoto where we will stay for the duration of our visit.

Thursday, November 13th: Rest day for Deidre. Alan and I will go to Nijo Station, very close to our hotel, and purchase our ICOCA cards, which are used for all of our transportation around town. And we will explore the area around our hotel for restaurants and stores, and pick up some groceries and snacks.

Friday, November 14th: Nijo Castle (1603) and Gardens, the Kyoto International Manga Museum, and Kyoto National Gardens.

Saturday, November 15th: Fushimi Inari Shrine, with the 10,000 Torii Gates.

Sunday, November 16th: Rest day for Deidre. Alan and I will go to LDS Church in Northeast Kyoto and then walk south to Ginkakuji (Silver Pavillion from the 1480s). Then we will walk the Philosopher’s Path next to the Kamo River to the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design.

Monday, November 17th: Deidre’s Maiko Makeover at 10 A.M. in the Gion District, two hours. Alan and I will explore the Yasaka Gardens nearby. We will meet Deidre for her walk about and photos, and then go for lunch in the Terimachi Shopping District. Explore area.

Tuesday, November 18th: Rest day for Deidre. Alan and I will take a bullet train to Hiroshima to the Peace Memorial Museum and Park.

Wednesday, November 19th: Kiyotaki Trail to Takao, Arashiyama, and Iwatayama Monkey Park.

Thursday, November 20th: Rest day for Deidre. Alan and I will explore the Gion District.

Friday, November 21st: Kintsugi Experience for Deidre and Penni; Alan will explore for two hours. We will all go to the Kiyomizu-dera Temple (1600s) after lunch, the Ghibli Store, and Gojo Bridge.

Saturday, November 22nd: Travel to Uji and the Tale of Genji Museum and then the Fall Illumination Festival at the Byodo-in Temple (1052) at 6 p.m. for an evening experience.

Sunday, November 23rd: Rest day for Deidre. Alan and I will go to LDS Church again and then walk to the Nishijin Textile Center for a Kimono rental and pictures, a Kimono Fashion show, classes on weaving, and a historical textile museum.

Monday, November 24th: Depart Kyoto by bus to Osaka at 6:00 a.m., fly from Osaka to Tokyo, Tokyo to Seattle, and Seattle to Spokane, arriving about 1:00 p.m., same day! In reality, about 31 hours of travel time.

  3. Thanks Debbie, we survived the long flight, though it was very hard on Deidre. I think that will be the hardest part of the trip. She’ll rest and then we’ll start exploring!
